DustWatch as we know it

Led by Professor Grant McTainsh, researchers based in Brisbane (Griffith University) and Sydney (Department of Environment and Climate Change) have been studying Australian dust transport and deposition for over three decades. Dust monitoring equipment is located across the continent to frequently record data on wind erosion. With such large-scale events as dust storms, the more observation points the better. So, the DustWatch project was created as a way to both improve data as well as enhancing community awareness in the areas dust transport and wind erosion occurs.
By using an Australia-wide network of volunteer DustWatchers, local observations are combined with data from satellite imagery, meteorological records, field measurements and models to produce detailed maps of regional-scale wind erosion.
In this way, the extent and severity of wind erosion across Australia can be better understood by everyone.
