DustWatch Nodes

SNAP-SHOT:

DustWatch Nodes (DWN) are sites equipped with dust monitoring instruments, and managed by volunteer DustWatch observers.

DWN provide continuous, objective data in partnership with the community.

The DWN project produces:

n       Reporting tools – maps, statistics and imagery

>  Read the latest DustWatch Report

n       Research - publications and information derived from the networks.

n       Education tools to raise awareness about land management issues.

Monitoring dust activity

Monitoring Australian arid dust activity with instrumentation has been occurring for three decades. The inception of the DustWatch Nodes has improved both the spatial and temporal scales of monitoring. DWN utilise high volume air samplers (HVS) and PM10 monitors that are maintained and operated by selected DustWatchers.

There are currently five high volume air samplers (HVS) and 22 PM10 DWNs operating.

The HVS instrument samples total suspended sediment onto a glass fibre filter paper (Whatman GF/A with nominal pore size of 1.6 μm).

The PM10 data are sampled with DustTrak® sensors which are portable, battery-operated laser photometers which give real-time mass concentration within the particle-size range 0.1 – 10 μm.
