Wind Erosion Histories

Background, Timeframe

Monitoring the extent and severity of wind erosion across Australia would be assisted by: producing long term wind erosion histories for NRM regions, upgrading input data to the CEMSYS wind erosion model and further developing and implementing the DustWatch community network of wind erosion observers.  This information and improved modelling capacity would be used by the States and regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) bodies for resource condition reporting.  These products would also assist in prioritization of locations for future Caring for our Country (C4OC) investments. This multifaceted project commenced at the beginning of 2009 and is due for completion mid 2009.

Project Outcomes

The objectives of this MERI project are:

  • To provide long term wind erosion histories developed from Bureau of Meteorology observation data for all NRM regions in Australia for the period 1960 to 2008.
  • To make wind erosion data and time series available to NRM regions on the DustWatch website, (www.dustwatch.edu.au).
  • To provide improved soil particle-size input data for the CEMSYS wind erosion model

Project Leaders and Partners

This project was led by Professor Grant McTainsh and Dr Craig Strong. Technical support provided by Mr Kenn Tews, Ms Michelle Baker and Mr Kyle Barton.

Funding was provided through the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as part of the Caring for our Country project (C4OC).
